Easter, I think, has become one of those holidays mostly focused on the kids. I mean, when was the last time you received an Easter basket as an adult? Probably never.
In 2022, according to the National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to spend $19.5 billion for Easter. That breaks down to roughly $156 per person!*
What if we decided to change our perspective this year + made some changes with how we spend our money on Easter? What if we chose to celebrate Easter a little more ethically in 2022?
Easter Outfits
Always start looking in your own closet first! I guarantee you that there is something you could rewear for this one day 😉 I would even venture to say, no one would remember if you repeated the same outfit either! But, if you just feel like you need a new Easter outfit, how about a “new to you” mindset? Borrow something from a friend or check out your local thrift shops! If online shopping is more your thing, check out NxtGen Closet! They’re a new, online thrift shop selling premier label names for women + kids, while also desiring to make a difference is our world. Both of which I can totally get behind!
Easter Baskets
For starters, thrift your baskets! Then, do not, I repeat, do not, buy the plastic basket filler 😖 Recycle old paper, run it through the paper shredder + voila! Basket filler!
When it comes to treats for the basket, opt for fair trade candies, especially chocolate! There are SO many options available nowadays + can be confidently purchased from stores like Publix or Target. Marshalls even has fair trade candies occasionally.
Opt for more basket gift ideas that are fair trade. For example, DoneGood, Trades of Hope + Uncommon Goods all have great ideas for ethically made gifts. I’d even venture to say thrift your gifts! Stuffed animals can always go through the washer + dryer.
Easter Decor
Thrift what you can here. I know one of my go-to local thrift shops always sets out holiday decor they have well in advance. If flowers are more what you’re looking for, you already know I’m going to say shop local! Hit up your local farmers market for flower vendors.
Use eggs from a B Corp, like Nellie’s or Pete + Gerry’s Organics, when you decide to dye eggs with the littles. Then, use natural dyes like coffee, beets, onion skins, red or purple cabbage, blueberries, turmeric + white vinegar.
Shopping clearance racks after the holidays is another way to prepare for the following year. Clearanced items tend to be tossed, so this is a fantastic way to reduce unnecessary waste + you are saving a little money at the same time!
Easter Lunch/Dinner
Start with your local farmers market! Always support local when you are able to + what better way than a holiday meal with family! My local farmers market always has a great selection of produce + meat vendors.
However you choose to celebrate Easter this year, I hope you’ll consider making some ethical changes to your celebrating! 🐰
