Subscription Boxes

Everyone loves getting mail.

I mean, what’s better than opening the mail box to find a package with your name on it? Better yet, when you forget it’s coming + are completely surprised….unless you’re like me + keep all the order emails until it’s arrived at your door 🤷🏻‍♀️

Let’s talk about those subscription boxes showing up in your mailbox!!

Kiwi Eco Box

Kiwi Eco box is a monthly curated box of eco-friendly products. They send you products to help you be closer to living a zero waste life, to include their shipping being plastic free. You can customize your box by adding items in it (at additional costs).

They also provide three different special curated boxes that vary in cost + products; they are “Zero Waste Self-Care”, “All In Zero Waste”, or “Zero Waste Kitchen”. There’s no commitment, so you are able to cancel or skip months at any time.

My recent box included: bamboo comb, reusable cotton rounds, tea strainer, bamboo cutlery set, pet waste bags (I added these).

Cost: $25/month

Simply Earth

Simply Earth is an essential oil subscription box. Their oils are sourced ethically + they are the purest form of the oil. They also donate 13% of their profits to fight human trafficking.

Each month is a different curated box of oils + supplies, accompanied with recipe cards + labels/stickers for your creations. You have the option each month to skip or gift it to someone (which is unique + I like!). You can also switch out oils that come in your monthly box + purchase oils separately.

The oils are full size bottles, 15 mL. Their website includes curated essential oil recipes + tips/tricks for using your oils. They also provide a course on using your oils when you first subscribe.

Cost: $41/month

CAUSEBOX

CAUSEBOX is a curated box of ethical + sustainable products for your home + self care. The boxes are filled with products totaling over $250 in value; a great deal when you look at the membership prices. They are also a Certified B Corp, which is extremely impressive + important to me.

You have two membership options at varying price points; quarterly or annually. Opting for the annual membership affords you different perks than the quarterly membership.

While I have never purchased a CAUSEBOX myself, I have benefited from them just the same as Christmas presents. My friends who have purchased have said they really enjoyed the box + will order again.

Cost: Quarterly $54.95; Annually $199.80 ($49.95 per season)

My thoughts

I think subscription boxes are a great idea. I have used them in the past + really enjoyed it. They provide a variety of products + the opportunity to try out a product you may not have before; that’s my favorite part.

My hesitancy with them comes in to play when I ask the following questions:

  • Does this play a part in my over consumption of things?
  • Could my money best be used elsewhere?
  • Do I actually have the money for this?
  • Do I actually need these things?

My Kiwi Eco Box had some things I had actually been wanting; reusable cotton rounds + a bamboo comb. While the reusable cotton rounds have been great at getting the remaining makeup off my face, I didn’t actually need them. What I had been using was fine. The comb is great, but challenging with my fine hair + I find myself going back to my old brush.

The same goes with my latest Simply Earth oils box . It contained some oils that I had been wanting for quite some time (in all honesty, I base whether I purchase the box off the oils in it..no shame). I didn’t really need the oils, nor did I really have the money for it.

So, before you sign up for a subscription box (PS – I really do love these + would totally recommend them!), I’d caution you to ask those questions above before you buy.

Know of other subscription boxes catering towards an ethical or sustainable lifestyle? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

PS – If you would like $10 off your first 5 months from Simply Earth, use the code AUDRAH50
